I have been really busy and haven't had that much time to devote myself to my studies. I did however accomplish organizing the AR project report and hoping to be done by the end of February.
I have been involved in many community planning meetings and have finally sewt-up a date for my 'Parent Conference' in April. This is very exciting as we, the community agencies, will be hosting this event. This has been an idea of mine in which I had wanted to provide information for our parents not only to promote parental involvement but give them othe skills to assist their children.
I have been sitting at my computer, both at home and in my office, coming up with wonderful plans and ideas to utilize technology for the upcoming events. I have spent countless hours researching the best possible activities to utilize during this event.
I am also excited to deliver the next group of on-line students, starting Tuesday, Feb. 3/09. The grade 12's that just finished this course are somewhat baffled at themselves for what they were able to accomplish during this class. I am hoping that the grade 10's will have the same insights.
The best thing about this on-line class is they won't need a sub if I'm not there! lol

Hi Loretta,
ReplyDeleteSounds like you've been pretty busy but I totally understand what you're saying about not being able to commit 100% to studies but you've got a headstart in terms of utilizing technology. The students in your classes will definitely gain valuable information from you as well as the content you introduce them too. Keep up the work you're doing within your school and your community, it only takes one person wanting change...soon others will see the significance in your beliefs.
I look forward to hearing how the parent conference unfolds. Getting parents involved can be difficult but anything you try is great. Connect to them any way you can!
ReplyDeleteA parent's conference would be an ideal match for my community needs. Please send some info when you have a chance.
ReplyDeleteI am still fascinated on the idea of the parent's conference. At my school in Big Island we have a high percentage of single mothers. The role of father has disappeared over the past several decades. I want to ignite that love of fatherhood that I have. I am looking for technology resources that will enable a workshop in the community. I found this resource on-line.

In response to Biggles:
ReplyDeleteI have not done the parent conference as of yet. It is planned for April 7, 2009. We are trying to improve Parental Involvement in our school and I thought that this type of conference would help parents understand the school's role in their children's life journey. As well as assisitng parents with coping skills to help their children, skills to develop a successful home and school partnership. I have developed a survey for the parents and will deliver it to them in teh coming week so the planning process and types of topics they would like to see are included. This way we are not dictating to the parents, but are working with them in a collaborative fashion and that we value their contributions. I have some topics already they are: The Traditional Cree Values; Traditoinal Parenting; Active Parenting (we have several people trained in both these areas, including myself, in the community; Bullying Prevention; Anger Management; Suicide Intervention & Prevention; Strengthening Woodland Cree Families (my AR project, hopefully will be approved by then); Scrapbooking; Setting-up a homework area/study at home; Computers: how to help your child with research, monitoring your child's on-line communication tools (Bebo).
Maybe we'll add more as we recieve the surveys.
Hey tahnks for the info, I'll make sure I check it out and sure I'll share some info on how the Parent Conference planning and implementation is going.
Loretta, you might want to contact Darrell, who is also taking this class. He organized a parent conference in the fall. It was excellent and he may have some some suggestions for things to try. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteAR report will be done by the end of the month! Nice. Good work. I sat down last night and did some typing, but I find myself wandering to a blog or some other web tool to check out! I think this week off will focus my attentions towards THE paper.
ReplyDeleteThanks Brent! Will Do!
ReplyDeleteJust an idea for you, Laurette C is also looking at parental involvement for her final AR master's project. she set up a radio program. You might find her blog interesting? darcy
